West Virginia High School Students Find Recipe for Success at WV HEAT ProStart Hospitality Cup Competition |

Charleston, WV – The West Virginia Department of Education’s Office of Hospitality Education and Training (WV HEAT) announced today the results of the 8th annual WV HEAT ProStart Hospitality Cup Competition held at Stonewall Resort on March 3 & 4, 2009. Students on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams from both the culinary and management divisions of the competition were awarded scholarships from fifteen post-secondary schools to pursue advanced training in culinary arts or hospitality management after high school. The total value of all of the scholarship offers awarded was more than $400,000.
Teams of ProStart students participating in the culinary competition demonstrated their creative abilities through the preparation of a meal consisting of a starter, entrée and dessert. Taking first place in the Culinary Competition was the team from Putnam Career and Technical Center, Joy Dalton_ Instructor, which was mentored by Chef Tommy Grant of Carver Career Center. Second place was awarded to Marion County Career and Technology Center, Diana Kincell_ Instructor, which was mentored by Chef Todd Stalnaker with Sodexho Corporation. The team from Wood County Technical Center, Barbara Boardman_Instructor, which was mentored by Chef Mike Drazenovich of Sysco was awarded third place.
Teams of ProStart students participating in the management competition demonstrated their knowledge of the restaurant and foodservice industry by competing in a case study, where students were tested on their communication skills and ability to apply their knowledge of the industry to practical situations, and a question-and-answer game show-style event. Giving meaning to the name of the Hospitality Cup, in a first ever occurrence, first place in the Management Competition went to the team from Putnam Career and Technical Center, Joy Dalton_Instructor, which was mentored by Chef Tommy Grant of Carver Career Center. Second place was awarded to the team from Academy of Careers and Technology, Lesa Spears_ Instructor, which was mentored by Chef Kris Suita of Sodexho. The team from Wood County Career and Technology, Barbara Boardman_Instructor, which was mentored by Chef Mike Drazenovich of Sysco also was awarded third place in the management competition.
“These students have dedicated themselves to learning in the classroom and then applying it in this competition. It is exciting to watch them earn the opportunity to represent our state at the national competition,” said Donna Wilkes, WV HEAT and ProStart Coordinator. “Knowledge, skill, motivation and teamwork are key factors of success at this competition. Certainly, this will remain true as they move forward in their career and education in the restaurant and foodservice industry.”
The team from Putnam Career and Technical Center will now represent West Virginia in the culinary and management events at the 8th Annual National ProStart Invitational for a chance to win the national title April 24-26, 2009 at the Town and Country Resort & Convention Center in San Diego, CA. At the national competition, the team will compete against 39 other qualifying teams from across the country. First, second, third, fourth and fifth place winning teams from both the culinary and management competitions at the national level will be awarded scholarships to pursue a college education.
