Mountwest Community and Technical College takes Grand
Champion award at 2012 Cast Iron Cook Off held at The Greenbrier, White Sulphur
Springs, WV
Program Director Chef Lawrence Perry and Lead Instructor
Isabel Cross lead a team of culinary arts students from Mountwest Community and
Technical College in Huntington West Virginia at Saturday’s Cast Iron Cookoff.
Program Director and Sous Chef Lawrence Perry said, “It is
such a great feeling to see our students perform well at this level of
competition. This was their first experience in this type of structured event
where they compete against other chefs at varying skill levels. They have
practiced hard and shown their skills and abilities.”
Chef Perry is a 2004 graduate of the program. In his final
semester at MCTC as a student, he also was an instructor for the first semester
students in Culinary Sanitation and Safety.
Team Coach and Lead Instructor Chef Isabel Cross brings an
international flavor to the table. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Chef Cross
moved to San Francisco before eventually making her way to West Virginia. She
and her husband own 21 at the Fredrick,
an upscale restaurant featuring American Cuisine as well as caterings.
The Mountwest Community and Technical College Culinary Art’s
program moved into a new facility located at 1648 8th Avenue in the
fall of 2012. The 14,000 square foot state-of-the-arts facility is equipped
with classrooms, computer labs, warehouse space, 1,000 square feet of
cooler/freezer space and two instructional lab kitchens.
The facility was the former Mountain Bounty Kitchen
Incubator. Some of the mass quantity production equipment includes 40 gallon
steam jacketed kettles, rotating rack ovens, wet filling station for sauces and
jellies, alto sham smokers and a blast freezer.
Part of the mission of Mountwest Community and Technical
College is to develop entrepreneurship among its students and the community.
Beginning in the fall of 2012, MCTC will begin allowing food entrepreneurs the
ability to rent the kitchen by the hour for the production of their food items.
Mountwest Community and Technical College offers an
associate’s degree in both culinary arts and hotel/lodging management. For more
